Box-office roundup – Dec. 7, 2014 – “Hunger Games: Mockingjay” has easy three peat

The Hunger Games - Mockingjay Part 1 - Donald Sutherland as President Snow1. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 – $21.6 million [3rd week; $257.7 million]  For a third weekend, Katniss and company had an easy victory in retaining its box office spot. At this rate, “Exodus: Gods and Kings” will need a strong showing to topple it next weekend, but it may be a hard sell domestically and Chris Rock’s “Top 5” could also make for a tight race for the top spot.  My money is still somewhat leaning toward Katniss.

Box-office roundup – Nov. 30 – “Hunger Games: Mockingjay” keeps odds in its favor

The Hunger Games - Mockingjay Part 1 - Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen1. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 – $56.8 million [2nd week; $225 million] – Jennifer Lawrence’s third Hunger Games maintained its dominance and easily retained its box office crown for a second weekend. Factoring in Thanksgiving tallies, the film earned $82.6 million over the last five days. While “Mockingjay” failed to measure up to the lofty opening of the first two films, its second weekend cruised to an easy win. “Catching Fire” has the highest Thanksgiving week performance with $110 million but “Mockingjay” had the third highest and held a very strong 53 percent from its opening week. Worldwide, it’s already earned $480 million. It should retain its top spot until mid-December when the final installment of “The Hobbit” trilogy arrives in theaters.

Movie Review: Horrible Bosses 2 – better the second time around

Horrible Bosses 2

The problem with an unexpected hit comedy is when the filmmakers decide to go back to the well for another installment. Rarely does the follow-up prove remotely as endearing as its predecessor and merely comes across as a money grab.

“Horrible Bosses 2” easily could have fallen into that category — there’s only so many ways to milk the formula of three guys trying to kill their awful supervisors. Instead, the filmmakers decided they’d rise to the challenge of making a superior sequel leading to hands-down the most hilarious comedy of 2014. Horrible Bosses 2

I am so all psyched up for “Horrible Bosses 2” that it’s ridiculous. I know, I know, there’s so little chance it’ll recapture the insanity of the first one and will have diminishing returns like “The Hangover” sequels, but I don’t care. I am all in for this one and can’t wait to see it. This trailer covered all that I want from the sequel: Continue reading Here’s the #HorribleBosses2 trailer and it’s already looking like 2014’s best comedy
