Box office roundup – Nov. 18, 2012 – Twilight finale wins easily

Bella (Kristen Stewart) bonds with Renesmee (MacKenzie Foy) as Edward (Robert Pattinson) and Jacob (Taylor Lautner) look on.

1. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 – $141 million [debut week] – There should have  been no shock that the final installment of the episodes of Bella, Edward  and Jacob was this week’s #1, but surprisingly this wasn’t the best opening for the franchise.  “Star Wars:  Episode III – Revenge of the Sith” ended the last Star Wars trilogy easily ahead of “Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones’” $80 million      opening and far outpaced “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace’s” $64 million haul. “Skyfall” set to top “Avatar”

James Bond (Daniel Craig) in an explosive shootout in “Skyfall.”

For the all-time U.K. box office at least. “Skyfall” has already brought in $117.1 million and should knock James Cameron’s blockbuster off its $150 million perch, in two to three more weeks. In the U.S., its total has now reached $109.1 million to come in at #433 on the all-time list. It should easily reach $150 million by the weekend and $250 million isn’t that big a stretch so look for it to continue climbing the charts.

Worldwide, it’s now in the #90 all-time highest grossing spot with $538.7 million and should eclipse “Quantum of Solace,” which sits at #76 with $586.1 million in days and top #72 “Casino Royale’s” $599 million take by the end of the weekend. It’s safe to assume “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2” should win the box office in the U.S., but it will be interesting to see how far “Skyfall” slips in its second week since “Twilight” and “Skyfall” are definitely not competing for the same audience.

Daniel Craig stars as James Bond in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures/Columbia Pictures/EON Productions’ action adventure SKYFALL.

1. Skyfall – $87.8 million [debut week] – This was no real surprise considering audiences had been deprived of a new Bond adventure for four years. The Sam Mendes/Daniel Craig is the best debut for a Bond film. Continue reading Box office roundup – Nov. 11, 2012 – How far will the record-breaking Bond film “Skyfall” soar?
